Ask a Naturalist: Why are Snakes Slimy?

Posted on 5/22/2020

Snakes are some of the neatest animals you see in Iowa. While they may look slimy & slippery they feel very different when you touch them. Those scales that look so slick are part of a really interesting group of adaptations, let our naturalists explain!

A big thank you to Lilly, age 8 from Omaha for that great question! Do you have a question for our naturalists? Email it along with your name, hometown, & age or grade if you are a student to environmentaleducation@pottcounty-ia.gov. You may be featured on an upcoming installment of “Ask a Naturalist”!
