Fire Refresher Training: March 19th

Posted on 3/5/2019
Prior to Euro-American settlement, fire was a regular occurrence throughout the Great Plains and helped to maintain the health of our natural systems.  In the modern age, land managers utilizing fire must be proficient and thus must train regularly.

As a steward of the natural lands in Pottawattamie County, Pottawattamie County Conservation staff conduct an annual basic wildland firefighter training for beginning firefighters and an annual refresher for veteran firefighters. This year's refresher will be held on March 19th at Hitchcock Nature Center.

The class will minimize the amount of classroom training and maximize field training.  Training topics are wide-ranging and include such things as first aid, communication, fire suppression tactics, equipment use, situational awareness, avoiding entrapment, leadership, and managing risk.  During our annual refresher, we address the national and local training needs to serve firefighters that are working out west on wildfires and firefighters working locally on prescribed fires and wildfires in Iowa.

Pre-registration is required to attend this refresher training.

To learn more about the training, its prerequisites, and to register, contact Natural Resource Specialist Chad Graeve at chad.graeve@pottcounty-ia.gov or by calling 712-328-5832.
