Pottawattamie County Conservation Looking for Public Input on Mt. Crescent Development by December 31st

Honey Creek, IA: A website showcasing Mt. Crescent Ski Area development planning is now live and Pottawattamie County Conservation is encouraging the public to share their ideas for four-season recreation on the 106-acre site by December 31, 2023.

The ArcGIS StoryMap website, which can be accessed at www.skicrescent.com, includes a survey to collect public input, provides information about the site, and highlights feedback gathered at open house events held in October. The site will be updated over time as development plans progress and the public is encouraged to check back for more information.

The public can also send their ideas to mt_crescent_ideas@pottcounty-ia.gov or mail a letter to Pottawattamie Conservation at 227 South 6th Street Suite 204 Council Bluffs, Iowa 51501.

Included within the website is a development zone map that highlights current site features as well as development limitations due to Mt. Crescent’s location in Iowa’s globally significant and ecologically fragile Loess Hills.

Input collected will be used to inform Pottawattamie County Conservation’s decision-making process for Mt. Crescent Ski Area development plans over the next several years. Development opportunities being explored include a new lodge and rental facilities, low-impact recreation opportunities, and hosting public events, such as music festivals, at the ski area. Later in 2024, a draft of the Mt. Crescent Ski Area Master Plan will be added to the website with opportunities for public comment.

As of June 2023, new hiking trails at Hitchcock Nature Center loop through Mt. Crescent Ski Area and connect the two properties, making Mt. Crescent accessible year-round.

Pottawattamie County Conservation is working with SE Group to develop the master plan.
