Welcome to one of the most unique areas of Hitchcock Nature Center, the Hohneke (Haw-nick-ee) Savanna. You’ll notice this area is not quite woods and not quite prairie. It is an Oak Savanna; a transition zone between grasslands and woodlands.
You’ll probably also notice that a majority of the area's vegetation has died off. But, don't fret! Our Natural Areas Management team is working to restore biodiversity and ecological function and a part of that process is the elimination of the invasive grass Smooth brome.
Brome was introduced onto this site prior to it becoming part of Hitchcock and its eradication is the next step in a long process that has included fire, grazing, seeding, and mowing.
While unseemly for now, this area will soon be a diverse mix of prairie, woodland, and savanna plants and animals.
Please bear with us through this unattractive, but necessary phase of restoration. Thank you!
