Volunteer Spotlight: Kanesville Elders Nebraska Omaha Mission Group

Join us as we shine a light on Pottawattamie Conservation volunteers to thank them for their time and talents and recognize the difference they make in our community. Our volunteers ROCK!

Fifty-two weeks, rain or shine the Kanesville Elders Nebraska Omaha Mission group has been coming out to Hitchcock Nature Center and Crescent Hill at Hitchcock, volunteering their time.

What have they been doing?

More like, what haven’t they done?! This passionate group of missionaries have been busy helping park staff with a broad variety of needs, including splitting firewood, maintaining hiking trails, clearing brush and invasive species, cleaning and organizing park facilities, sorting ski equipment and boots, painting, and more.

Why do they do it?

This group loves spending time together in nature and generally having fun, but mostly they love to serve as part of their mission work.

What makes volunteering here special?

As one member put it: “Being able to serve kind people in such a unique place in nature.”

What have they learned while volunteering?

Missionaries had the opportunity to work with Operations Supervisor Chad Graeve for a few weeks. During that time, Graeve talked to them about land management and why it’s especially important in the globally significant Loess Hills, which harbor remnant prairie systems. Before doing their work here, they did not realize the significance of the Loess Hills and why conservation work is so imperative to the area.

What’s something interesting about the Kanesville Elders?

The Kanesville Elders spend 18 to 24 months away from their families and serving communities. They rotate every six weeks within the region, spreading the word about their mission.
