Hitchcock Insect Club is a grassroots club made up of local individuals who are passionate about bugs, and they want YOU to join in the fun!
On July 27th, Dr. Joseph Phillips, Creighton University, will present the main program, The Midges of Lake Mývatn. Lake Mývatn is cherished by the Icelandic people and attracts tourists from around the world due to its unique scenery and diverse waterfowl. However, the lake is also famous for its abundant chironomid midges, giving it the name "midge lake" in Icelandic. Dr. Phillips will talk about research he has conducted over the past decade that highlights the essential role played by midges in this unique ecosystem. Discover the fascinating connections between these seemingly insignificant creatures and the intricate web of life at Lake Mývatn.
The presentation will start at 6:30 p.m. but you are welcome to join a group walkabout beforehand at 5:30 p.m.
Hitchcock Insect Club meetings take place on the fourth Thursday of each month from May through September 2023. Participation is free with a park membership or $5 park entry fee.
Please meet at the Loess Hills Lodge.
