Participants in this introductory session will study & learn:

  • How one oak affects the biological community & reveals secrets of the past
  • The ecological significance of Iowa's Loess Hills landform.
  • The biographical history of Iowa's own Aldo Leopold & his "Land Ethic"

This program is free for all attendees & is intended for participants age 14 & over with an interest in the natural world, no experience or prior knowledge is required to participate. Online pre-registration is required as space is limited. For questions not answered online please call 712-545-3283.

Participants should note that due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic we are planning on presenting all programs in the "Land Ethic Workshop" series online. Participants will need an internet connection & be willing to use the Zoom online meeting platform to attend.

About "A Land Ethic Workshop"
Following the life work of naturalist Aldo Leopold, participants in this unique, 10 month long programming series will gain a deeper understanding of our local ecosystems through study and discussion of seasonal ecology and will connect with others who share a passion for nature.

"A Land Ethic Workshop" is the creation of biologist and Leopold scholar Ron Cisar.  Ron taught science and biology in the Omaha Public Schools district for 32 years and at Iowa Western Community College as assistant Professor Emeritus until 2017. He is nationally recognized as a singer-songwriter, has spent time leading educational and research programs in national parks, and is the recipient of numerous awards for excellence in education.

Programs are held online from 9:00 a.m. to noon & occur monthly, one Saturday per month, March through December. Participants may register for individual sessions or opt to attend all 2021 sessions. Participants may choose the programs that are of interest or register for the full 10 month program season. Participants do not need to attend every program session. Individual sessions are $15.00 per person & our full programming series of 10 sessions is $75.00. Attendees who register for the full programming series will receive a copy of "A Sand County Almanac" & a blank journal for use during the class.
